History
History of Sancti Spíritus
The province's story is anchored in early colonial settlement and in the sugar landscape around Trinidad. Sancti Spíritus was founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez and is counted among Cuba's first Spanish villas. Trinidad and the Valle de los Ingenios later developed around the wealth and labor systems of the sugar economy, leaving a built landscape that is still central to the visitor experience today.
